Description
Not all prisons have a fence or walls to keep prisoners in. To escape from prison, one must be aware that one is a prisoner.
Some prisons rely on the ignorance of its prisoners to keep them from attempting to escape. In the 1980s, crack cocaine became a means of escape, preventing prisoners from seeing their dark reality. In 1989, an aspiring hip-hop artist from Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, believed that housing projects in America are actually glorified prisons. He wanted to inform residences in his housing project that they were living in a fence-less prison. Later that year he signed a record deal. He named his debut studio album, Escape From Marcy.
Escape From Marcy is now available in paperback. Contains original lyrics from rapper Joseph Carpenter aka "Joe-Joe".
