Description

As a part of the museum's ongoing Cool History summer programming, we're hosting a special guest lecture series where experts will give lectures on a variety of topics. These events are free and open to the public. All of the lectures will take place at the National Civil War Naval Museum (1002 Victory Drive). This series is made possible by generous support from the Georgia Humanities Council. Thursday, July 28, 2022, at 7:00pm Paula Lenor Webb will talk about her book Mobile Under Siege: Surviving the Union Blockade. On August 5, 1864, the Civil War arrived at Mobile's doorstep. The Union Navy blockaded Mobile Bay and the city for eight months. Confederate General Dabney Maury fought to protect the city and its citizens who refused to leave. Union Admiral Farragut and General Canby slowly starved the city, knowing that the fall of Mobile could end the war. Webb details the experiences of the ordeal and the defeat of a Confederate city that echoed through the entire country. Paula Lenor Webb, has a Master’s in Library and Information Science from the University of Alabama. She is currently a tenured librarian at the University of South Alabama, in Mobile. She has always enjoyed research and documenting her findings.
