This is a class where individuals where individuals are learning both the pottery wheel and or hand-building techniques that culminates with a evening/ nighttime gathering to fire our work with a process unlike any other in the art of ceramics. This is known as Raku. It includes a very quick firing process. At 1900 degrees after the glaze matures the red got glowing work is removed and placed into metal containers filled with combustible materials like newspaper, sawdust, and depending on what glaze you have picked the right materials. They quickly ignite and engulf the work in fire. More combustibles are added and quickly the lid is closed l. The oxygen needed is no longer available and the magic begins. Brilliant and iridescent, crackled or cratered, and flashing multi toned surfaces are made. It is unlike any ceramic process and very interesting visually. It is an ancient method used in the Japanese pottery tradition. I recognize it being a bit difficult to imagine and I encourage everyone to look up a video online to see what it is. The workshop will enable everybody to finish their work in this way along with learning ceramic fundamentals, pottery, and many tricks to accelerate the growth process. It has been a long few years for everyone and clay and fire are both so engrossing that for the this creative and magical process is a true gift.
