Bookbinding Techniques: Sewing Text Blocks

Making a nice and even book begins with great sewing technique. Students will learn the difference between supported and unsupported sewing and why you might want one or the other, how to prepare paper for sewing, how to set up and use a sewing frame, and several stitches. They will sew a text block using the coptic stitch, lap link unsupported, lap supported, single cord, and double cord. Please note that this workshop will not produce a completed book. This is a skills workshop. Students will be able to take home their completed text blocks and use them in a future Headbands/Endbands sewing workshop or case them in on their own. ______________________________________________________________________________________ This class is taught by Mel Hewitt. Mel Hewitt is a book artist working her way towards becoming proficient in all aspects of the book arts. Her skills currently lie in traditional and contemporary binding structures and finishing techniques, paper marbling, paste papers, and incorporating letter press, screen printing, and relief printing into her pieces. Mel’s work ranges from utilitarian one-of-a-kind journals to sculptural artist books. She is a board member of Spokane Print and Publishing Center where she also teaches classes on the book arts, and serves on the board for the Northwest Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers.
