Turtles and tortoises are gaining in popularity these days. It's unfortunate that many are purchased in pet stores with no accurate instruction from the sales clerk on how to take proper care of that cute little hatchling that could grow to 200 lbs!
For your reading enjoyment, the San Diego Turtle & Tortoise Society has a great website, sdturtle.org, that includes well researched Caresheets, pictures to identify the more common species, a poison plant list, blueprints for a large and small tortoise house, and an up to date list of upcoming events.
For the very affordable price of a $35 membership it makes you eligible to adopt any of the many (many) turtles and tortoises available for no fee adoption. However, your enclosure/yard must be compatible for their needs.
San Diego Turtle & Tortoise Society has many healthy dinosaurs ready to go to their new homes.
If you have the room and want to dazzle your family and neighbors with one of these incredible pets, please go to our website, sdturtle.org and read the caresheet. If it's within your scope, send me pix of your yard and we'll go from there. Easy breezy.
These big guys don't hibernate so they will need a heated tortoise house and LOTS of yard space to lumber around in. Blueprints are on the website.
Also available are youngsters 4" and larger of desert tortoises, sulcatas, Russians and red eared sliders.
