Blind Person Seeking Volunteer Opportunity Working With Animals

After thirty years of government employment, I retired six months ago and want to do volunteer work with animals. I possess a desktop computer with software that reads text aloud. I do not own a “smart phone.” I use a white cane and travel via public transportation. Contacting animal shelters one after the other and beginning the conversation with “I’m blind” probably won’t get me anywhere; understandably, the person receiving the email or phone call will be reluctant—they don’t know me, after all. I reside on the city’s north side but will travel to the suburbs if the right opportunity presents itself. I feel most comfortable with dogs but am willing to entertain other options.
