Description

Before the event We have kept the price low so you can send 2 participants. We will ask you to administer our validated VCI-17 Culture Assessment Survey to your management team, and to send us your statement of core values and (if you have them) cultural philosophy and behavioral expectations. At the conference you will receive an initial written report with observations and recommendations, including comparing your survey results with our database plus an appraisal of your core documents. Tuesday, July 19: Arrival The Kirkwood limo service will pick you up at the airport and bring you to the hotel for the opening reception. There are no attractions (aka distractions) in the Cedar Rapids area so we will be able to immerse ourselves in the work at hand. Wednesday, July 20: Cultural Blueprinting for Your Invisible Architecture™ Defining Invisible Architecture, the construction metaphor we use where the foundation is core values, the superstructure is corporate culture, and the interior finish is workplace attitude. Why Invisible Architecture is more important than bricks and mortar for creating patient and employee experience. Three levels of accountability, the downside of hierarchical accountability, and why you need a Culture of Ownership. Real world examples of excellence (and lack thereof) including several from outside of the healthcare industry. We will analyze values and culture statements from several of our participating organizations, and as a group activity we will workshop how to create a Cultural Blueprint. Thursday, July 21: Building a Culture of Ownership The Values > Behaviors > Outcomes Continuum and why it’s important to distinguish between them. The downside bumper sticker values and the dangers of allowing a gap between stated and enacted values. The importance of aligning personal and organizational values, and strategies for doing this. Using the Culture Mapping Wheel to define and align key priorities. The Honey and Glue Formula for attracting and retaining great people, because recruitingandretention is not a single word. Creative ways to tell your organization’s culture story, both internally and externally. We will workshop this as a group activity. Friday, July 22: Values-Based Leadership Key success factors for positive culture change. Transactional and transforming leadership, and why you need both working together. The culture-crafting power of rituals and stories, making best use of meetings and huddles, and deploying The Pickle Challenge for Charity and The Self Empowerment Pledge. Why every manager should be a motivational speaker and simple steps to be much more effective as a presenter. Why in today’s world you need leadership in every corner, not just in the corner office, and strategies to promote a Proceed Until Apprehended! mindset. Graduation and certificates of completion. This course is not eligible for continuing education credits. After the event We will send each participant a consulting report of observations and recommendations specific to their organization. Participants will be expected to deliver a report and/or presentation for the executive leadership of their organization. Library and Homework Among other things, participants will receive the books Building a Culture of Ownership in Healthcare (second edition of this 2-time AJN Book of the Year), The Florence Prescription: From Accountability to Ownership (fifth edition), the Cultural Blueprinting Toolkit (second edition), and Joe’s forthcoming book Proceed Until Apprehended! Leadership for What Matters. "I got a whole new team and didn't have to change the people because they changed themselves." - Paul Utemark, (then) Chief Executive Officer, Fillmore County Hospital, Geneva NE
