OK, I realize this is a long shot, but I know from long shots.
My dad was a golfer and when I was a wee lad he decided
to take me to the fairway and show me the ropes (boxing
reference; mixed metaphor already).
When I was ready to putt I had a brainstorm. It's pretty hard to
hit the ball to the hole, so why not hit the hole to the ball?
That did not work. A fail worse than my encounter with you. To wit:
You were (and presumably still are) a petite Asian woman crossing
W. 72 and Amsterdam. I was a guy lost in thought at the opposite
corner ruminating on life. Not all life, just certain aspects of the thing.
As you passed me you gave me a seventh day look... you know, when
God was resting up and felt good about himself.
It was a friendly look from a kindly person.
I, in my reverie saw this moment but it did not register immediately.
It took two seconds.
Then, I felt a certain surmise.
Just like stout Cortez when with eagle eyes
He stared at the Pacific—and all his men
Look'd at each other with a wild surmise—
Silent, upon a peak in Darien.
They were on a boat at the time. Exploring
the world. This was way before google maps.
But I was on the poor old Upper West Side.
I turned and saw your advancing figure...
advancing away from me that is. OK, retracting
I guess.
I thought to chase after you and say hello, but
knew in my heart how unseemly that would be.
So, I retreated and decided to resort to craigslist.
