SAN RAMON, CA — More than 5,500 Contra Costa County residents were battling the coronavirus as of Monday, the most recent day for which data is available, and the COVID-19 case count continues to climb in San Ramon and beyond. Some 39,400 COVID-19 cases have been reported in Contra Costa since the beginning of the pandemic, including 1,206 San Ramon cases that have resulted in eight deaths, according to Contra Costa Health Services data. Countywide, more than 320 deaths have been linked to COVID-19. While Contra Costa's current number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients — 249 — far surpasses the previous high of 108 patients in late July, hospital admissions appear to have plateaued in recent days. This is consistent with trends across the state, "the major exception" being Southern California, where Los Angeles County has been hit hardest, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday. There are currently 150 patients in Contra Costa's ICU beds, meaning more than nine in 10 ICU beds here are full. Contra Costa's ICU bed availability is slightly below that of the nine-county Bay Area plus Santa Cruz and Monterey counties, where an average of 9.5 percent of ICU beds are open. A third of Contra Costa's ventilators are in use. ICU capacity is the key factor state officials consider when determining whether a county may be removed from the regional stay-at-home order, which shut down outdoor dining, bars, salons and more, and set tighter restrictions on other sectors. The Bay Area will exit the stay-at-home order Jan. 8, at which time state officials will review ICU availability projections four weeks in advance before determining whether Contra Costa County and others may exit the stay-at-home order and return to the four-tiered, color-coded COVID-19 risk assessment system.
