Cost: FREE Hike distance: 2 miles Hike Length: 2 hours Spots available: 20 Meeting Location: Linne Woods Linne Woods is one of the more underappreciated preserves on the North Branch. Large parts of this site are floodplain, and the northwest corner is a reconstructed prairie created on the site of a spoils pile from the Deep Tunnel Project. However, Linne Woods has some of the most dramatic river bluffs on the North Branch, with some of the largest oaks on the North Branch. As well as a system of ravines and one of the few bur oak savannas remaining on the North Branch. Important details: Face coverings are suggested when social distancing isn’t possible. Parts of this hike will be on dirt paths and off-trail. Trails might be muddy, so boots are recommended. We also recommend wearing long pants that cover the ankles to protect against poison ivy and thorny plants. We usually wait until one hour before the event to send out a notice of cancellation. So please watch your emails on the day of the hike. We'll meet at the north end of the parking lot, off of Dempster St. Look for yellow “volunteer” signs to mark the meeting spot. This hike is the seventh in a series of 15 hikes organized by Friends of the Forest Preserves to showcase the different forest preserves on the North Branch of the Chicago River. Throughout the year we will be leading a hike at another forest preserve, making our way upstream and visiting most of the forest preserves along the North Branch. On every hike, we’ll explore the flora, fauna, natural history, human history, and conservation efforts at another North Branch preserve. Our next hike will be at Harms Woods Nature Preserve on Sunday, July 24, 2022.
