Description
What is ASIST? ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) is a two-day workshop (presented over two consecutive days) that is designed to build your intervention skills so you feel comfortable intervening until either the immediate risk of suicide is reduced, or additional resources can be located. This course is intensive, interactive, and practice-dominated, designed to help you feel confident in your ability to recognize risk and intervene to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. This is a certified training, meaning you will be provided a certificate of completion. You will be certified to use the ASIST skills and model. This course will prepare you to communicate with a person who is struggling and give you the confidence to assist when needed.* Who should attend ASIST training? Anyone over 18 years of age can attend a training. Professionals as well as community members have found great value in this training. Everyone can benefit from this training. Why Suicide Intervention Training? Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States, with 45,979 deaths in 2020. This is about one death every 11 minutes. The number of people who think about or attempt suicide is even higher. In 2020, an estimated 12.2 million American adults seriously thought about suicide, 3.2 million planned a suicide attempt, and 1.2 million attempted suicide. ASIST training provides the needed skills to see the above statistics decrease. Often times people do not ask the question, "Are you thinking about suicide?" out of fear. Fear for the answer, fear for the responsibility, fear of ___________. We talk about the many myths that feed this fear. ASIST allows participants to see that it is not as scary as they they think. Through this training you build confidence to approach someone at risk without the fear taking over. ASIST is designed to help you become more willing, ready, and able to help persons at risk. Suicide can be prevented with the help of prepared caregivers. Just as “CPR” skills may make physical first aid possible, training in suicide intervention develops the skills used in suicide first aid. -Registration is required for this Training.
