Majora Carter: author, real estate developer, urban revitalization strategy consultant, MacArthur Fellow and Peabody Award winning broadcaster will be Jericho Road's annual homeownership month speaker. Born in the South Bronx, Carter’s career has been dedicated to urban revitalization strategies and sustainable economic development in historically disinvested communities. Her most recent book, Reclaiming Your Community, focuses on talent-retention to reduce brain drain in American low-status communities. Carter’s commitment to community empowerment has resulted in eight honorary PhDs, her TedTalk, “Greening the Ghetto,” and a lecturer position at Princeton’s Keller Center. A quote from her book is now emblazoned on the walls of the Smithsonian Museum of African-American History and Culture: "Nobody should have to move out of their neighborhood to live in a better one.” This quote perfectly reflects why Jericho Road was drawn to Carter as this year’s speaker. Her work reflects the mission of our organization and the reason for our creation: advancing community institutions, stabilizing and investing in community infrastructure, and providing healthy and accessible affordable housing in New Orleans and neighboring areas.
