Electronics are everywhere yet seem complex and off-limits, hidden inside enclosures with tiny screws and large safety warnings. This introductory course will provide a hands-on glimpse into this vast and mysterious world with a focus on projects for Makers that can be created with only a few hours of instruction such as basic robotics, DIY games, music, and electronics-based art. If you’ve ever wanted a peek “under the hood” of the devices that surround us or wanted to quickly get over the hurdle of getting started in electronics and making something, this is the course for you.
Learn about batteries, motors, light bulbs, and even a few LEDs and other electronic components. We’ll discuss Direct and Alternating Current (DC & AC), Ohms Law (the mother of all electrical rules), and take a quick look at how your house is wired to PNM. You’ll construct simple circuits. Then (try to) figure out how and why they work the way they do use a multi-meter (maybe the simplest and most useful piece of test equipment there is). Finally, we’ll take a quick look at some electronic components and circuit boards in preparation for a possible future class in using the ubiquitous Arduino micro-controller.
