The Groundskeeper performs tasks to maintain the overall appearance and maintenance of the campus lawns, planted and paved areas. Puts trash out for Waste Management. In the event of no trash service, makes trips with trash to transfer station. Prepares soil for planting, plants seed, sod, turf, bulbs, plants, trees, and shrubs. Installs, repairs and operates lawn sprinkler (irrigation) systems. Seeds, mows, irrigates, sweeps, fertilizes, top dresses, edges, aerates and maintains lawns. Transplants seedlings, trees, shrubs, and other nursery stock. Rakes and removes leaves; pulls, hoes, and controls weeds. Prunes, sprays, and fertilizes trees, shrubs, and ground covers. Uses a variety of manual tools and equipment, such as rakes, pruning shears, hand edgers, loppers, shovels, wheelbarrows and pesticide sprayers. Operates power and motorized equipment such as weed trimmers, chain saws, backpack blowers, rototillers, light tractors, front-end loaders, small trucks, lawn mowers, sweepers, aerators, sod cutters and snow blowers. Cleans, services and maintains tools and equipment, including power equipment. Removes debris, leaves, brush, snow, and ice from areas such as walks, stairs, roads, ramps and parking facilities; applies ice melter, sand and gravel. Installs and maintains campus signs, fences, rockeries, etc. Assures that grounds are well groomed and free of trash, debris, and hazards. Assures that walkways are clean and clear of hazards. During inclement weather keeps walkways and roads clean and clear of hazards to the maximum extent possible. Carries out work orders as required. Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience: High school graduation or GED. One year experience or technical training involving ground maintenance, plant care, cultivation, and landscape installation. Washington State driver’s license required. Motor Vehicle Record check with no serious violations recorded. Knowledge of operations involving grounds equipment use. Knowledge of lawn and plant care. Ability to work effectively with residents, department personnel, peers, and supervisors. Team-oriented. Regular, predictable, and dependable attendance.
