GREAT FALLS, VA — Fairfax County police Tuesday were investigating the drowning death of a 29-year-old man who on Sunday became submerged in Difficult Run near the entrance to Great Falls Park.
German Salinas of Sterling died from his injuries Tuesday afternoon at a hospital, police said. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
Police officers went to the 8800 block of Georgetown Pike shortly after 6 p.m. on Sunday. Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department personnel found Salinas a quarter mile off the roadway on a nearby trail.
Salinas was taken to a hospital on Sunday with injuries considered life-threatening.
Fairfax County police determined Salinas was swimming in Difficult Run, which connects to the Potomac River. While swimming, he became submerged underwater and did not resurface, they said.
Friends pulled him out of the water and attempted life-saving measures, police said.
The police department said it does not suspect foul play.
