BRIDGEPORT, CT — Twenty firearms, including an AR-15 style rifle, and one BB gun were turned in over the weekend during the Bridgeport Police Department's gun buyback event, held at the department's Community Services building on Sylvan Avenue, according to authorities.
"As per the guidelines set out by the Department ahead of time, these firearms were surrendered by members of the public anonymously," said Scott Appleby, director of the Bridgeport Office of Emergency Management.
Those who turned in weapons were given gift cards of up to $250. The following firearms were turned in:
8 semi-automatic pistols6 revolvers2 shotguns3 rifles1 AR-15 style rifleAccording to Appleby, the firearms were cleared and inspected by Sgt. Luigi Tucciarone (department firearms instructor) and cataloged into NEXGEN by Officer Janice Vizzo (property police officer).
The weapons were then secured in the department's Property and Evidence room, and will then be turned over to the Connecticut State Police Firearms Unit for destruction.
Bridgeport police were assisted during the buyback by The Council of Churches of Greater Bridgeport and Swords to Plowshares Northeast.
