BALTIMORE, MD — Baltimore filmmaker John Waters will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce recently announced. The 76-year-old is among 24 new honorees selected as part of the Hollywood Walk of Fame Class of 2023. Other honorees include Ludacris, Bill Pullman, Uma Thurman, Vince Vaughn, Juanita Moore (posthumous) and Paul Walker (posthumous). "The panel thoughtfully selected these talented individuals, and we can't wait to celebrate them as they become part of Hollywood's history with the unveiling of their star on the world's most famous walkway!" Ellen K, Chair of the Walk of Fame Selection Panel and Radio personality, said in a news release. In an interview with Baltimore Fishbowl, Waters said he was thrilled to be chosen as an honoree. "I am really excited about it," he added. "Are you kidding? I wish my parents were alive." Dates have not yet been scheduled for Waters and the other star ceremonies. Recipients have two years to schedule star ceremonies from the date of selection before they expire, organizers said. Known for his pencil-thin mustache, Waters grew up in Baltimore in the 1950s. According to his IMDb profile, he began making silent films in the mid-'60s and screened them in rented Baltimore church halls to underground audiences. His "big break" came with the 1972 release of "Pink Flamingos," a movie about an eccentric woman named Divine and her unusual family competing with a Baltimore couple to be named "the filthiest people alive." His Hollywood crossover success came with 1988's cult classic, "Hairspray," a movie Waters directed and wrote.
