Northbrook Resident Killed In North Dakota Bicycling Accident: Reports

JAMESTOWN, ND — A Northbrook man was killed Sunday when he was hit by a pickup truck in a rear-end collision while bicycling in Stutsman County, North Dakota, according to media reports. Timothy St. John, 20, was declared dead at the scene of the accident. St. John, a 2020 Glenbrook North High School graduate, was riding southbound on North Dakota Highway 20 shortly after 12:30 p.m. when he was struck by James Lees, 78, of Jamestown, who was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado southbound on Highway 20, reports The Jamestown Sun. North Dakota Highway Patrol said Lees failed to yield to the bicycle, struck the rear tire and pushed it into a ditch. He was not injured. Police said Lees was not wearing a seatbelt and St. John was wearing a helmet. The incident remains under investigation. St. John had just completed his sophomore year at Purdue University, where he was majoring in mechanical engineering, according to his obituary. He was working in an Engineering Co-Op position with Collins Aerospace in Jamestown, North Dakota at the time of his death. At Glenbrook North, St. John was a scholar-athlete in cross-country, wrestling and track. In 2020, St. John was the recipient of the Glenbrook North Parents' Association Dr. Paul Pryma Award for Courageous Kindness, according to a social media post. The award recognizes a student who has made a gallant effort to offer kindness and inclusion to his or her peers. The recipient is recognized as a confident, friendly senior who is generous in his or her efforts to welcome and support all those with whom he or she encounters. The Parents' Association sponsors this $1,000 scholarship in recognition of Pryma, a former GBN principal. St. John was the beloved son of Jeff and Julie (nee Stahlecker) St. John; loving and caring brother of Jack, Renee, Aaron and Joe; cherished nephew of Jean (late Mark) Candotti, Jim (Patty) St. John, and Paul (Jeanne) Stahlecker; adored cousin of Kelly (Mike) Habas, Kristi Candotti (fiancé Joe Eby), Jamie (Ryan) Humphrey, Jessica St. John, Jenny (J.D.) Kodadek, Julia (Josh) Arias, Tara Stahlecker and Craig Stahlecker; he will also be missed by extended family members and many dear friends. A visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, at The Village Church of Northbrook, 1300 Shermer Road, Northbrook.
