ELMHURST, IL – A man raised a handgun and took his own life as Elmhurst police approached him early Saturday evening, police said. About 5 p.m., Elmhurst police were alerted to a car traveling west on Lake Street. It was reported by Berwyn police as belonging to a missing 37-year-old man, according to an Elmhurst news release. Berwyn police said the man wanted to take his own life and had a handgun, Elmhurst police said. When a second officer showed up, police pulled over the man. The man pulled into the parking lot of a business at Lake and Addison Road in Addison, the release said. As officers got near, the man shot himself, police said. The man was taken by ambulance to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. No bystanders or officers were injured, according to the news release. The investigation is being conducted by Addison police and the DuPage County Coroner's Office. The events were recorded on officers' video cameras, police said.
