Description
ELMHURST, IL – A 53-year-old Elmhurst man holding two guns was having a mental health crisis early Monday morning, police said.
About 6:30 a.m., the man, who lives in the 600 block of West Albert Street, called 911 and said he saw people inside and outside his house, police said.
When the man opened his door to officers, he was holding the guns, though pointing them downward, according to a police news release.
Before the officers arrived, they learned the man had fired one round inside his house, in a downward trajectory, the release said. No one else was on the property.
Officers said the man lived alone and was hallucinating because of a mental health issue. He was taken to a medical facility, police said.
Officers searched the house and found the two guns and ammunition, the news release said.
Elmhurst police have notified the state police, so action may be taken in connection with the man's firearm owner's identification card, or FOID.
The man's name has not been released because he has not been charged and is under medical care, police said.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Elmhurst Police Department at 630-530-3050.
