Hiring for the Assistant Groundskeeper at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. Position Description below, to apply please apply directly here: Part Time, Non-exempt Compensation: $19.60/hr Shift: Hourly (range 24hrs/week): 8:00 AM–2:30 PM, Monday–Thursday (6 hour shifts with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break) Mission: The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History inspires a thirst for discovery and a passion for the natural world. Position Summary: Provides custodial and maintenance services for the museum’s buildings and campus. Responsibilities also include the set up and break down of museum and private events, repair projects as assigned and emergency response to events around the museum campus that require facilities support. Assist the Director of Facilities in any assigned projects or tasks. Provides services in moving equipment, exhibit displays and furniture, receiving shipments and storing supplies. Responsible for the inventory, stocking and ordering of the museum’s custodial supplies. In addition, this position provides services ensuring the secure and safe environment for our museum guest and staff. This position also supports the exhibits department and aids in any exhibit maintenance and repairs as assigned and approved by the Director of Facilities. Position Summary: Under the direction of the Lead Groundskeeper is responsible for maintaining the grounds and landscaping in a manner consistent with the museum’s natural setting. In addition, this position provides support to the museum’s facility use and the museum’s exhibition program where assigned. Specific Responsibilities: Provides services related to all aspects of the museum’s grounds and landscaping including: Assist in the care and visual presentation of 9 ½ acres of museum landscaping Sweeping and/or blowing the grounds of leaves and other items Pruning and watering all landscaping Raking of leaves and debris on a daily basis Controlling weeds through pulling, spraying, mowing, etc throughout the property Spraying for infested or diseased plants Preparing and applying mulching and fertilizers as necessary Cleaning drains, gutters and flat roofs of leaf debris throughout the year. Maintaining paths for easy passage including repairing holes, clearing of pathways of leaves and debris and making sure museum is ready for public path of travel Maintaining rock walls including repairing loose stones Removing trees or shrubs when necessary and informing supervisor if larger work needs to be contracted out Clearing overgrowth Working closely with neighbors to maintain shared landscape areas Maintain Puesta del Sol street median landscaping for the city of Santa Barbara Watering of all planters and pots throughout the property that are not on irrigation Assist in gopher and other rodent control on campus Other duties as assigned Assists in the maintenance of the museum’s irrigation systems including: Assisting in the installation of new systems in areas where none are installed Assist in the planning and layout of new irrigation Upgrading irrigation equipment where necessary Maintain current equipment and check for normal wear and tear and possible leaks Check for leaks regularly and reports leaks and issues to the supervisor so it can be logged Install leak detection sensors as assigned Repair or replace control valves when directed Advise supervisor on all irrigation system problems Maintain and fill all museum water features on campus Assists in the maintenance of the museum’s artificial creek exhibit including: Checking and cleaning the creeks various filters Clearing the creek of large debris and other obstructions Works with the Groundskeeper to maintain a regular inspection schedule and data logs Perform daily inspections as needed of the screens for larger debris Several times a year perform a detailed clean out of the creek of silt and debris Checking and adding Bromine tablets when needed Assist in repairs when needed and informing supervisor of damages/issues Inform supervisor of needed supplies for the maintenance of the creek (Ex: Bromine, filters) Provides assistance to the regular landscaping services to the Museum’s Butterfly Pavilion: Work with Exhibits and the Groundskeeper on landscape maintenance inside the pavilion Maintain a regular watering schedule for the pavilion’s plants When butterflies are present follow the standard operating procedures for butterfly containment structures to meet USDA regulations Provides services and support to museum events, facilities use, and exhibits as directed Responsible for routine disarming and opening of the museum campus in the morning Maintains a clean and safe area for visitors and staff Implements the museum’s policy of maintaining a natural setting for its buildings Advises supervisor of supplies and repairs needed on equipment related to landscaping maintenance Advises supervisor of any tree work or measures to treat diseased or dying plants or if a licensed safety inspection is required from a certified arborist. Operates large equipment that may be rented (ex: skip loader, small excavator, fork lift, scissor lift or museum vehicle) Picking up and transporting of mulch, gravel, cement or dirt from distribution centers Ensures workspace is clean and clear of clutter consistent with Museum and department operations and safety procedures. Performs other related duties as assigned. Essential Requirements: High School Diploma or GED. 1 to 2 years landscape experience. Frequent standing, walking, bending, sitting, climbing (stairs & ladders), crawling and lifting of moderate to heavy loads (50lbs); Occasional work in elevated places Able to follow verbal and written instructions; good auditory skills with a full range of hearing and good vision including acuity, depth perception, color vision Basic computer skills, ability to use email and communicate using the Museum’s Microsoft Outlook, basic Microsoft Word. Good knowledge of native plants to the area. Comfortable working around the general public. Able to respond to emergency situations including but not limited to chemical spills, fires, and evacuations Able to safely operate electric transport cart, leaf blowers and other landscape related equipment including rototillers, soil compactors, cement mixers and a tractor Flexible time management (working around other departments and projects) Hold a valid California Driver’s License Must be vaccinated from the COVID-19 virus and hold a valid COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card Work Environment: Frequent work outdoors Frequent work throughout all Museum facilities including conference facilities, galleries, exhibit halls, presentation halls, research laboratories, storage rooms, and maintenance and/or metal/wood shop Occasional work with or possible exposure to the following: Portland cement Herbicides Paint Paint solvents Gasoline & Diesel Low toxicity pesticides Please apply here:
