Here are the top three stories in New Orleans today: Louisiana Congress members have requested an extension from federal officials to spend the Hurricane Katrina aid that still has an estimated $2 billion left in the budget. In a joint letter explaining their reasoning behind the request, Congress members claim that the combined long-lasting impact of the storm in addition to other natural disasters throughout the years justify this request. (Biloxi Sun Herald) NOPD began investigating an apparent murder-suicide in the Lower Garden District on Sunday. A wellness check was conducted around 9:20 p.m. that revealed a man and woman dead at the scene. The woman's gunshot wound appeared to be self-inflicted after shooting the man. (WDSU New Orleans) Hundreds gathered Sunday to celebrate New Orleans' first Juneteenth festival at Congo Square. Funding for the event was provided by the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation with organizing by Shaddai Livingston who is the director of the New Orleans Juneteenth Festival Inc. A second line kicked off the festival that continued into Congo Square where there were many performances, demonstrations and activities. (WGNO New Orleans) Help us make this newsletter better!
