Here are the top stories today in Bedford: A shout out to Polly, a 9-year-old, 18-pound Shih Tzu owned by Joan Shute, of Bedford, who is competing in the prestigious Westminster Dog Show this weekend in Tarrytown, New York. Polly is a member of the toy group, that often excels in the "show ring," but it turns out that Polly is a champion agility dog, and is competing in the Masters Agility Championship at the prestigious 146th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Lead sinkers and jigs are toxic to the birds. explained John Cooley, a biologist with the Loon Preservation Committee." There are only a little more than 300 pairs living in the Granite State," Cooley said, adding, "If a loon ingests lead tackle, it's going to cause lead poisoning in the loon, and as far as we know, it will kill it within two to four weeks." Tackle shops throughout the state are participating in the buyback program. You can cheer on Bedford's Tom Coteas at the SNHU Arena in Manchester on Saturday, June 25, as he lifts challenging amounts of weights to compete in the U.S. Strongman title. Tom Cote "will have the home-court advantage'" in the competition, as one of nearly 570 men and women from across the country heaving, pushing, and lifting "unfathomable" amounts of weight to prove they are the strongest. Cote, 54, is a retired U.S. Army master sergeant and Manchester native. You can read more about this story here: (Subscription/The Union Leader) Help us make this newsletter better!
