Description

Press release from the City Of Davis: June 16, 2022 The City of Davis announced today a new outreach campaign to encourage responsible management and planning of unwanted items as residents are moving out this summer. Every year, large apartment properties rent large dumpsters for their residents to fill with unwanted household items as they move out during summer. An estimated 200 tons of items are collected in these large dumpsters every year. Many of these items could be reused or recycled, such as furniture, clothing, electronics and more, rather than sent to the Landfill to be trashed. The City's Recycling Program is encouraging residents and students to plan by reusing or recycling as many items as possible to save waste in the Landfill. "What's unique about this time of year is that these dumpsters will fill up with usable furniture, clothing and household goods that could really make a difference to someone else," says Davis Mayor Gloria Partida. "Planning ahead before moving out allows residents to be responsible for their waste and be more climate-conscious. There are opportunities for unwanted but usable items to live a second life." Options for residents to recycle, reuse or dispose of unwanted items include: •E-commerce platforms, such as Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, eBay, thredUP or Poshmark •Garage, apartment, or yard sales •Thrift stores, like All Things Right and Relevant, Goodwill, Yolo County SPCA Thrift Store or Aggie Reuse Store •Recycling centers, like Recology Davis or the Big Blue Barn Please check with each location for hours, rules or forms for selling or donating items. The Yolo County Big Blue Barn accepts donations such as usable furniture, clothing, kids toys, sports equipment, electronics, housewares, and more and even has a vast array of recycling opportunities for other items like batteries, mattresses and appliances, among others. The City asks residents to be responsible while moving out and to help keep the community beautiful. Leaving furniture, mattresses and other household items in front of properties or on the street and sidewalk is a violation of City Code and may be a safety hazard for bicycles and pedestrians. Visit www.DavisRecycling.org for information on how to responsibly reuse, recycle and dispose of unwanted items.
