Hello, hello! It's me, Alexis Goring, your host of the Charlotte Daily — here to explain all the most important things happening in town. First, today's weather: Pleasant with sunshine. High: 86 Low: 62. Here are the top five stories today in Charlotte: According to WCNC, "the Catawba County Sheriff's Office is investigating a homicide" after "deputies responded to a breaking or entering call in progress at a home along 30th Street Northeast in Conover" around 2:47 a.m. on Sunday morning. Two people were found shot at the scene — Amy Raelynne Phillips, age 46, and her daughter Keiyara Kelly Johnson, age 22. Phillips died and Johnson was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries. The suspect, Shykwon Rashad Gibbs, was apprehended at the scene. (WCNC.com) CMPD officers played a softball game on Saturday with members of the Charlotte Latino community. Officer Ricardo Adames organized this game. He said the purpose of this event was "to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the Latino community." He said that sometimes, members of the Latino community are "afraid to call 911 because of the language barrier." A goal of the game was to showcase Latino officers and let the Latino community know there's help available for them. (Fox 46 Charlotte)Since Juneteenth was created to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans in the United States, this holiday has been celebrated by different groups of the African community. West Charlotte is a historically Black neighborhood where Juneteenth was celebrated this year with food, music laughter and progress. Alesha Brown, founder of the local community outreach group known as For The Struggle, organized the festival. Brown shared her thoughts on this event. "The purpose of coming together today is to commemorate our ancestors and what they had to go through, but also to unify our community to educate our community so that we will become better and stronger, more educated about the systemic, racial and social and justices that happen to us every day," she said. (WCNC.com)The two-year anniversary of the Beatties Ford mass shooting is approaching and the community wants to always remember the names of those killed on that tragic day. According to WBTV, on Friday, "members of the community and the families of Jamaa Cassell, Christopher Gleaton, Kelly Miller and Dairyon Stevenson gathered at the corner of Beatties Ford Road and Catherine Simmons Avenue for a dedication by Charlotte's Alternatives to Violence program." Everyone gathered to reflect on the day (June 22, 2020), honor the fathers in attendance, and remember the four people who were killed during the mass shooting. (WBTV) The Charlotte Hornets Foundation donated $25,000 to Loaves & Fishes/Friendship Trays Inc. (Mecklenburg County nonprofit fighting food insecurity) to expand the nonprofit's Meals on Wheels program. The money will help the organization buy a new food delivery car. Tina Postel is the CEO of Loaves & Fishes/Friendship Trays. "Delivering food to those who are unable to obtain or prepare their own meals is so important, and this vehicle will help us reach even more individuals in the Charlotte community. Our Meals on Wheels program is about so much more than just the food – it's also about providing human connection to the isolated and lonely and peace of mind to their families," she said.
