The Department of Justice, The Postal Service and Federal Trade Commission ordered Western Union to pay a huge fine for aiding scammers in the grandparent scam and the sweepstakes scam. According to THE FTC website, in 2017, the US Western Union Co , the world's biggest money-transfer company, agreed to pay a fine of $586 million to these agencies . Western Union admitted they became aware that their wire transfer service was involved in scammers' routine for collecting cash after phone calls scared senior citizens into believing bail money or medical costs needed to be paid to rescue grandchildren in another country or state. They were less than diligent in thwarting these overseas scammers . Between 2004 and 2015 Western Union collected 550,928 complaints about fraud averaging $1148, with 80 percent of them coming from the United States the government complaint said.
