Description

Located along the beautiful Allegheny River, the GAMMA facility includes a state-of-the-art research and development lab and on-site courts for product testing (and a bit of friendly competition among employees). What many people don't know is what was historically located at GAMMA's location; Washington's Landing used to be America's tenth largest livestock terminal and the second largest east of the Mississippi in terms of the volume of cattle, pigs, and sheep processed. In the 1900s, most of Pittsburgh's slaughterhouses were supplied by tenants on Washington's Landing, which led to a terrible smell that traveled for miles. In 1974, Dr. Harry Ferrari lost a tennis match due to inferior synthetic gut strings. Ferrari, a nuclear engineer and avid tennis player, became determined to develop a better tennis string. Dr. Ferrari’s experiments radically improved the strings’ performance, and ultimately led to the creation of the patented GAMMA irradiation process. With that, GAMMA Gut was born, a string technology that provided players with greater power, feel and control. In 1977, the US Racquet Stringer’s Association rated GAMMA Gut the #1 string, a title it would hold for the next 23 years. Even 40 years later, the patented processes, superior design and string technology are still giving players a distinct edge over the competition. In 2014 GAMMA Sports noticed a growing demand for tennis grips and discovered they were being used on pickleball paddles. The company's advanced knowledge of composites, plastics, and manufacturing techniques enabled GAMMA to create pickleball paddles and balls with materials and methods that few can match.
