Although the doors open at a set time, you may come and join the fun at any time during each day to participate and learn. Stay awhile or all-day, it’s up to you. If you miss a day, make up the learning on the next. If you have spinning wheel or floor loom you’d like to bring down and hang out with, or knitting and crocheting needles, bring them on down! There will be plenty of time for you to “free flow” on your own. We’ll also do some experimental weaving with natural plant fibers, play in indigo mud and make paper the easy way. There will also be a floor loom, a spinning wheel, peg loom and frame looms on location for you to try your hand at. Nibbles and drinks available, while they last. Please bring a lunch. Feel free to leave and return throughout open hours. It’s all up to you. Total Cost: $115.00 (the cost includes a kit for each component). The price total for the 4-day event of at least SIX fiber-art activities. Saturday, June 6, Noon to 8pm is the outdoor open air market. No prerequisite skills are required. This is a non-competitive environment. As this is a service, all sales are final. Thank you for understanding. 1) PROCESS & SPIN Learn to spin on a drop spindle , the precursor to the spinning wheel- and a good companion tool to have in your spinner’s bag of tricks. We’ll skirt wool fiber, wash it, dry it in the sun, comb it; before spinning it into yarn on handmade spindles we’ll make during the retreat. Kit contents: Tools for making a spindle, fiber and string. 2) NATURE WEAVING: BRANCH WEAVING This retreat component is ideal for beginners and for those who have very little weaving experience. You’ll learn the fundamental frame loom weaving, through branch weaving. There will also be an introduction to materials, as well as foundational weaving techniques, including learning how to easily make your own loom using recyclable or reimagined materials. Kit contents: Natural branch, cotton and wool fiber, weaving needle, fork, warping thread and cardboard loom. 3) NATURAL DYEING: ECO PRINTING & SOLAR Yes, eco printing, a form of natural dyeing where plant colors are transferred onto cloth and paper, a is fiber art. Using eco printing techniques, we’ll create botanical prints you can use in endless projects. You’ll also learn how to solar dye natural wool. Kit contents: Cloth, paper, natural dye sources, jar w/lid and wool fiber. 4) BEGINNING EMBROIDERY & SLOW STITCHING Embroidery is used to turn the plain into textile art or heirloom. Use embroidery to embellish pillowcases, knits, accessories and other textiles. During the retreat you’ll learn six classic embroidery stitches and experiment on a vintage or antique sampler using taught stitches or free-form stitches of your own. You’ll also make a black or red work Zentextile square using the meditative drawing technique of Zentangle. Kit contents: Embroidery thread, threader, embroidery needle, embroidery hoop, cloth, preprinted samplers (2), paper tiles and hand needle. What to bring: A pair of small scissors. 5) HAND SEWING While this class is geared towards anyone interested in vintage and historical sewing or for anyone interested in learning to sew by hand. It’s a relaxing, useful skill and a revival of old skill craft. You’ll make your own swatch book sampler so that you can easily refer back to the skills learned, including learning where the taught stitches are most often used. Kit contents: Cloth, hand needle, bee wax, thimble and thread. What to bring: A small pair of scissors, measuring tape and a seam ripper. 6) PLANT FIBER: KOKEDAMA & LUFFA You’ll learn how to make a Kokedama ball and a macrame hanger in which to display it. Plus, you’ll learn how to marble on paper using india ink and learn how to process luffa, a fiber plant. Kit contents: Materials to bind the plant ball, natural fiber, materials to make the plant hanger, paper.What to bring: A small plant, such as an ivy to use for your Kokedama.
