Description
The first in a series of initiatives throughout South Florida to engage communities in co-creating solutions as opposed to creating solutions for them. We invite community residents, local leaders, and community-based organizations to join us in strategizing the best methods for preventing gun-related violence. This event will consist of roundtable discussions concerning the causes and solutions to gun-related violence in the communities of Liberty City. The event will take place at the Carrie Meek Center in Charles Hadley Park on Thursday, June 23, 2022, from 4 to 6 p.m. "This is the first of many steps to move forward, working with the community to discuss the root causes and social and structural determinants of health and distributing resources to support the overall initiative," said Jonathan Spikes, Executive Director of Affirming Youth Foundation, Inc. "We want to center the voices of community members in order to listen to their concerns and to incorporate their voices and perspectives into potential solutions." This is a component of a larger initiative to address health disparities throughout Miami-Dade County and ensure the healthy development of children. We recognize that the public dissemination of our survey results can facilitate the creation of collaborative efforts. Furthermore, we recognize that the proposed project may result in novel data that could benefit research with respect to gun-related violence. Final survey data will be shared openly and timely, while being mindful that the confidentiality and privacy of participants in the survey must be protected at all times. The results of this project will be disseminated to researchers, practitioners, teachers, and community organizations through the following ways. 1) We will create a website for this project to share materials, resources, and the update of the project not only with the participants of this project but also with others who are interested in the project and using the materials. The results of the surveys will be shared on the website; 2) We will attend research conferences in public health, epidemiology, education, and community engagement to present the results of the project; 3) We will send newsletters to community partners about the updates of the project and research results; 4) We will share our survey results through professional networks that Affirming Youth Foundatiion, Inc., or our institutional partners have access to; 5) We will use social media to promote our projects, such as Affimring Youth Foundation's and institutional and community partners’ Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts; 6) We will produce white papers and publish research articles in peer-reviewed journals based on the research results. All final peer-reviewed manuscripts arising from this proposal will be submitted to the digital archive PubMed Central and made publicly available.
