Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865-, the date when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to free the remaining enslaved African Americans in the United States. Texas was the last state of the Confederacy with institutional slavery despite President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, issued on January 1, 1863.
