Dobermans are FANTASTIC dogs if you want a lot of dog and have the time and energy to give one the exercise and mental stimulation it needs. But they are NOT cheap dogs for several reasons, but the most important one you NEED TO KNOW ABOUT! Dobermans, due to poor breeding choices by show ring breeders and those out to make a buck on a backyard bred litter suffer from a very high percentage of health issues, and in particular one deadly heart disease called DCM. Far too few breeders care enough to take the money from pup sales and PUT IT BACK INTO THE BREED like they should. Here are the facts: If you are interested in a Doberman, for yourself, for the dog, and FOR THE BREED make sure you go to an ethical breeder! In particular "European Dobermans" are becoming a bit of a fad, and too many people are buying up European dogs from large show-oriented puppy mills in Europe like Pride of Russia, Betelgese, AltoBello; kennels that produce hordes of puppies and who have lines FILLED with DCM! Please educate yourself before you buy a beautiful pup that will die suddenly and without warning at 2 years of age from DCM. Help the breed recover from poor breeding practices by choosing a breeder that CARES ENOUGH to do FULL OFA and DNA health testing. The breed deserves it! This is not an adverisement for my dogs (I always have a long wait list) but an honest attempt to get the word out to those interested in the breed to KNOW WHAT THE CHALLENGES ARE.
