NEW JERSEY - A Pennsylvania man was arrested at Atlantic City International Airport this week after he was found carrying a loaded handgun through a TSA checkpoint.
The man, of Radnor, P.a., was arrested on June 14 after his .38 caliber handgun loaded with seven bullets - including one in the chamber - was detected via X-ray monitor in the man's carry-on bag.
"Bringing a deadly weapon such as a loaded handgun to a security checkpoint is a very serious offense," said Thomas Carter, TSA's Federal Security Director for New Jersey. "Travelers are responsible for the contents of their bags."
Airport security officials notified New Jersey State Police, who confiscated the handgun and arrested the man. The Pennsylvania resident claimed that the carry-on bag and its contents, including the loaded gun, belonged to his father.
In 2021, TSA officers detected 5,972 guns at security checkpoints nationwide, with 86 percent of the guns found loaded.
Civil penalties up to thousands of dollars are issued to travelers who have guns and gun parts with them at a checkpoint.
Even those with concealed gun carry permits can get arrested and fined for carrying a firearm, as concealed carry permits still don't allow for a firearm to be carried onto an airplane. Those with TSA PreCheck privileges can also lose those perks if found with an item in violation of TSA police.
TSA has details on how to properly travel with a firearm posted on its website.
