NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — A man was stabbed to death in New Brunswick Tuesday night and the matter is currently under investigation. At approximately 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to the area of Seaman Street and Railroad Avenue following the report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers located Sanddi Cruz, 31, of New Brunswick, who sustained multiple stab wounds to the chest. Cruz succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene. The fatal stabbing is the city's third homicide of the year, and at least the twelfth homicide since the start of 2021, said Charlie Kratovil, who is currently running for New Brunswick mayor. (He ran a few years ago and lost.) According to Kratovil, violence is growing in the city of New Brunswick, but he says current Mayor Jim Cahill and Police Director Anthony Caputo have not appeared in public to discuss or address the increasing violence in the city. Kratovil also said the New Brunswick Police Department did not notify the public of Tuesday night's murder through its Nixle alert system or social media channels. By comparison, the Rutgers University Police Dept. always publish on their Facebook page when a crime happens to a student or a crime happens near campus. "All sections of New Brunswick deserve transparency when it comes to violent crimes occurring in our neighborhoods," said Kratovil. "The people of New Brunswick deserve answers, information, and access to those in power. Unlike other department heads, Director Caputo has not attended a single City Council meeting in over ten years, and that is unacceptable." Kratovil called on Caputo to attend Wednesday evening's City Council meeting. The police director did not attend. "The first step to solving a problem is admitting that you have one," said Kratovil. Anyone with information or surveillance footage of the area is asked to call Detective Elfi Martinez of the New Brunswick Police Department at (732) 745-5200 or Detective Walter Kelley of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office at (732) 745-3330.
