SAN MATEO, CA — Two Bay Area students received college scholarships through the San Mateo Credit Union's annual Financial Education Scholarship. Adrienne Chen of Capuchino High School and Aylin Salahifar of Carlmont High School were the 2022 recipients. The selection was based on community service, academics and an essay. Chen and Salahifar were selected out of more than 200 applicants. Chen's essay was about how she helped economically disadvantaged students reach their full potential, while Salahifar's essay was about compassion and her volunteering experience in community hospice, environmental advocacy and a online peer tutoring center that she created. "It is always an honor for SMCU to help local students move closer to their education and career aspirations," said Wade Painter, the president and CEO of San Mateo Credit Union. "Their successes benefit us all, because they will one day be the movers and shakers of our community. We are proud of the young people who took part in the scholarship program, and we wish every one of them a bright and successful future." SMCU's scholarship program was established in 2004 and seeks to help graduating high school seniors with college-related costs such as tuition, housing, books and meals.
