Farm Assistant // Short Creek Farm // shortcreeknh.com Overview Founded in 2015 by high school pals Jeff Backer and Dave Viola, Short Creek Farm produces farrow-to-finish pastured pork and grassfed beef on 300 acres of field and forest in Northwood, New Hampshire. We’ve distinguished ourselves with our value-added products—including sausages, smoked meats, and dry salami—many of which are one-of-a-kind and highlight local, seasonal ingredients. We have just opened a brand new 6,000-sqft USDA meat processing facility in Kennebunk, Maine, and we are seeking hard working folks with a passion for good food and good farming to join our tight-knit team. Because we’re small and growing rapidly, this is a unique opportunity to get in on the ground floor and generate real, meaningful impacts each day as we develop together. Description We are looking for an eager, motivated individual who is passionate about food and farming. Applicants for the should be detail-oriented and should have at least some interest in pasture-based livestock management. Some experience with livestock is preferred but not required. The Farm Assistant will often work directly with the Farm Manager, but should also be comfortable working alone or with other employees to complete projects. No equipment operating experience is required, but some familiarity with tractors and the ability to drive a stick shift is preferred. We are open to discussing full-time or part-time positions, depending on the applicant’s goals, skills, and experience. Preference will be given to applicants who can commit to a full year (at least) on the farm, and would be interested in growing into a management role. There may be opportunities for the right person to pursue an independent livestock-oriented business on our land while also working at Short Creek. Affordable housing may be available on the farm. Responsibilities --Perform daily chores and general farm maintenance under the supervision of the Farm Manager --Work on various projects including fencing construction and maintenance, manure spreading, pasture mowing, brush clearing, small construction projects, etc --Work on all aspects of livestock management, including rotational grazing management, cover crop planting, pig handling and moving, breeding herd management, minor veterinary procedures, etc --Must be comfortable learning to use farm equipment, including but not limited to tractors, field maintenance tools, farm trucks, and trailers --Maintain a good attitude and be respectful of livestock, the environment, and co-workers --Must be willing to do at least minimal farm work (i.e. chores) on Sunday Qualifications --Clean driving record and valid driver’s license --Ability and willingness to work in challenging physical conditions, including but not limited to any kind of weather, lifting/carrying 50+ pounds over various distances, kneeling, bending, twisting and standing --A demonstrated ability to pay attention to detail, and an ability to troubleshoot novel problems and determine creative solutions --Previous farming experience, as well as basic mechanical and carpentry skills, are preferred but not required Compensation Hourly: starting at $14 - $16 / hr Schedule: flexible, full- or part-time Benefits: paid time off, 401k matched savings plan, employee discount To Apply Please email with “Farm Assistant Job Application'' in the subject line.
