Family, Friends and Loved ones,
My name is Rachel Bearder and I am going to be a senior this fall at Edgewood College in Madison. I am a nursing major, and it is a profession that I have always felt a calling for. I have lived in Lake Geneva all my life and have been fortunate enough to travel quite a bit in my life and while doing so, it has opened my eyes to a world of possibilities.
I have been given the wonderful opportunity to travel with Edgewood College students and faculty to Cambodia for two weeks in January 2023 to provide health care to orphanages in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Family Care Cornerstone Project is our partnering non-profit agency who is assisting us to provide health teaching and nursing care to the children at various orphanages in the surrounding area. Cornerstone Project’s mission is to improve the quality of life for orphans, abandoned children, disabled and the poor in and around Phnom Penh by providing basic needs such as food, clothing, medical attention, educational and job opportunities.
During our stay there, I will be visiting orphanages and small villages providing health care and teaching to people who are seeking relief for all types of medical problems. We will be bringing medicines and supplies to treat these health care problems. As many of you may already know and may have supported me in my past travels to Guatemala, public health has been a passion of mine and is a place where I truly feel called to serve others. Guatemala was life changing for me and therefore, is one of the many reasons why I am studying Nursing. My time in Guatemala was truly life changing and I am beyond blessed to have another opportunity to help those in need.
