Is it true, as the Buddha said:
“Hatred does not end hate
Vengeance does not end revenge
Only love ends hate
Only forgiveness ends revenge” ?
Last year we held a service focusing on forgiveness and inspired by the Buddhist story from which those words come as well as words of poet Seamus Heaney:
“So hope for a great sea change
On the far side of revenge
Believe that a further shore
Is reachable from here
Believe in miracles
And cures and healing wells”
We will continue in the same vein, taking as our texts a poem by Thich Nhat Hanh, “Please Call Me By My True Names”, and a story by Roy Brown Eagle “Before There Was Time”. Together we will create the sermon through our responses to these and to our own questions about forgiveness. All ages RE will be held.
