Juneteenth is a distraction: Honor the 13th Amendment instead!!!!
The amendment was the post-Civil War statute that abolished slavery in the country once and for all. Enacted in December 1865, it embedded the freedom of 4 million Africans in the highest law of the land. It was viewed as a monumental act in human liberty and applauded around the world as an example of the promise of American democracy.
Juneteenth, on the other hand, is a relative footnote in the African-American experience, the story of the last Black folks to learn that the war was over. They were living in isolation on the Texas coast and unaware of events unfolding in the East. They were informed about the end of the war and President Lincoln’s 1863 executive order of emancipation by the Union Army. This occurred on June 19, 1865, and people broke out in jubilation.
The 13th Amendment was unparalleled in its importance, for it canonized in the Constitution a concept of human rights. It stated that “neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” Thus ended more than 250 years of African slavery in North America.
Unlike Juneteenth, the 13th Amendment is an indispensable and powerful part of our national story. Personally; I think it's just another holiday for the black community to publicly destroy things and get away with it! That's what usually happens.
