Suggested starting donation of $10. Future event updates: bit.ly/beuplifted On Sunday, June 26, 2022, Unity of Santa Barbara will present a screening of Candles in the Window. After thirty years of silence, Czerny tells her story in this short film documentary produced by Santa Barbara based, Danish filmmaker and composer, Bent Myggen. Czerny herself will be attending to speak and answer questions afterwards. Czerny grew up in Poland under Communism -- her family had been in the resistance for generations, first fighting Nazis, then Communists. Czerny's father recieved 7 years in prison by military court, was an “Enemy of the State” and had to leave the family to find work. When her mother was jailed, Czerny was left to starve while still in school. At 19 she escaped to England, where she learned English and then returned to Poland where the joined the Solidarity Labor Movement. As their trusted interpreter she gave interviews and translated news for the Western Press. One night, in a dark forrest, she partook in a secret meeting between the labor leader, Lech Walesa and a high ranking American priest, Monsignor George Higgings. This meeting of 1981 changed history.
