Description
On Saturday, May 28, 2022, Floyd Gerald Fields, loving husband and father of three, passed away at the age of 86. Floyd was born on October 23, 1935 in Mt. Vernon, NY to Taft and Valeria (née Brown) Fields. He received his Bachelor's degree from St. Paul's College in Lawrenceville, Virginia in 1957 where he was also inducted into the Omega Psi Phi fraternity which was actively involved in throughout his life. Floyd was a teacher in History and a range of other subjects for over forty years along with working for IBM & Polaroid and managing sales for the family business for many years. After graduating in '57, Floyd joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. In May of 1961, he married Anna-Stina Astrid Elna Antonsson in Stockholm, Sweden. They raised three daughters, Valerie, Annette, and Rebecca. After becoming a widow, Floyd married Gail Pettiford in July 16th, 2015. Floyd had a voraciously curious mind with a passion for research and social justice but also had a quietly creative side as seen in has 65 years of photography. His joie de vivre was most noticeable when he could share stories, discuss issues in race and politics, or share historical or genealogical research with new and old friends alike. If you knew Floyd, you were never alone as he made a point to always stay in touch with friends and family and help any student find their path to education. He was also an avid swimmer and a humble expert in languages such as German and Swedish as well as the occasional Korean and Spanish. He was known for his appreciation of slapstick humor, his appetite, and his kind and non-judgemental spirit. Floyd was preceded in death by his father, Taft, mother, Valeria, wife, Anna-Stina, sister, Jeanette (Flossie), and brother, Robert. He is survived by his wife Gail, his three girls, Valerie, Annette, and Rebecca, his adopted brother Stanley Smith, his seven grandchildren (Max, Ian, Claire, Cassius, Riley, Peyton, and Poppy), and several cousins, nieces, and nephews who he is so proud of. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 16th, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Greater Vision United Methodist Church 11901 Eastfield Rd. Huntersville, NC 28078. The Celebration will be followed by a re-pass which the family appreciates your attendance at. Instead of flowers, Floyd would want you to help build a foundation that helps others grow.
