Black Bear Spotted Walking Through Yard In Walpole

WALPOLE, MA — Walpole police are warning residents to be on alert after a home surveillance camera caught a black bear walking through someone's front yard Wednesday night. The Walpole Police Department shared the footage on their Facebook page, saying the bear was spotted off Leonard Road, adding that it wasn't far from Robbins Road and the Johnson Middle School. "While not totally unique to our area, black bears have been increasing in numbers and distribution since the 1970s," the Department said in a post. "The statewide population of bears is estimated to be over 4,500 animals and is growing and expanding eastward." Police are warning residents in the area not to set out bird feeders, and to make sure trash barrels are put out in the morning of trash pickup instead of the night before. Wildlife experts say that bears have become accustomed to human-associated foods and will turn to rely on bird seed, trash, and pet food. Removal of food sources and other attractants is key to preventing problems with bears.
