Fort Sewall Restoration Celebration Set For Saturday

MARBLEHEAD, MA — Two weeks before celebrating the Fourth it is time to celebrate the Fort in Marblehead. The public is invited to a free event Saturday to celebrate the restoration of historic Fort Sewall and the 100th anniversary of its ownership transfer from the federal government to the town of Marblehead. "Celebrating Fort Sewall" will be between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and will include tours of the Fort, Glover's Regiment cannon salutes, refreshments and more. There will also be speakers starting at noon. The Fort was built as an English reinforcement installation in 1644 and was known for many years as Marblehead Fort or The Fort on Gale's Head. In 1800, it was renamed to honor Samuel Sewall, Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court's Chief Justice. It remained under the direction of the state until 1922 when the federal government transferred ownership of the Fort to the town of Marblehead.
