ARLINGTON, MA — Arlington Senator Cindy Friedman has endorsed public defender Mara Dolan for Governor's Council, District 3, which includes Freidman's State Senate District, Fourth Middlesex. The Governor's Council is made up of eight elected Councilors who vet and vote on judicial nominations, commutations and pardons, and members of the Parole Board. Dolan seeks the Democratic nomination for District 3, which includes parts of Boston, all of Arlington, Brookline, Newton, Waltham, and her hometown of Concord among its 32 cities and towns. "The Governor's Council is responsible for appointing judges to our courts as well as members to the parole board," Friedman said in a statement. "Mara will bring her experience as a public defender along with her intelligence, her compassion, and her ability to listen and work with others; all critical skills necessary to ensure quality and fairness in our criminal justice system. I whole-heartedly support Mara for Governor's Council." "Senator Friedman worked hard to pass criminal justice reform legislation which included a Childhood Trauma Task Force to study and recommend gender responsive and trauma-informed approaches to treatment of youths in the juvenile justice system," Dolan said in a statement. "We need to make sure all our judges and Parole Board members are prepared to use what we know about how to make sure our children and youths are better off leaving the system than they were when they first came in." Dolan is challenging incumbent Marilyn Petito Devaney in the Democratic primary, which will take place on September 6. For more information on Dolan's campaign, go to MaraDolan.com.
