MADISON, NJ — Madison community groups have worked to continue making all residents feel welcome as acceptance of the LGBTQIA+ community has grown. Mayor Bob Conley presented a Pride proclamation to members of the Madison High School Gender and Sexuality Alliance at the most recent council meeting. Henri Wielandy and Valentina Peluso, co-presidents of Madison High School Gender and Sexuality Alliance accepted the proclamation. "The reason we have a GSA is to promote inclusivity for the LGBTQ community within our community, for the adults and children that don't feel accepted, and this proclamation is just such a great step for us", said Wielandy. Following the proclamation ceremony, Conley proudly added that he had the honor of conducting the first same-sex marriage in Madison's history in 2013. "It was special to be able to do that for a couple in love that were told for too long that they could not get married," Conley said. Conley also shared that his son was a major face in the GSA while attending Madison High School many years ago. "We need to have open minds and work with our youth and our adults... this is what pride month is all about," Conley said. Pride Month, which takes place in June, commemorates the Stonewall Riots of June 28, 1969, which were sparked by years of anti-gay persecution and harassment. The Stonewall Uprising is widely regarded as the starting point for the Gay Liberation Movement.
