RARITAN, NJ — A driver is hospitalized after their car crossed over Route 202 into oncoming traffic, hit mailboxes and a fire hydrant before launching down an embankment into a small pond on Wednesday night, according to Flemington-Raritan First Aid and Rescue Squad. The crash was reported just after 8:30 p.m. on Route 202 and Colony Road in Raritan Township. The car was driving northbound on Route 202 when it crossed the grass median north of Voorhees Corner Road into the southbound lanes. It then crossed Colony Road, hit a curb and launched down an embankment near Flemington Granite, according to Flemington-Raritan First Aid and Rescue Squad. Along with the rescue squad, the Raritan Township Fire Company and HMC Mobile Intensive Care Unit EMS-1 came out to find the car about 150 feet from the road down a steep embankment and resting partially in a small pond. The driver of the car, who was the only person in the vehicle, was laying on the slope next to the car. Emergency responders put the driver on a backboard and into a basket stretcher. To get the driver back up the embankment, several ground ladders were used to climb the embankment and cross over a creek. Cordless reciprocating saws were also used to clear a path through the brush up to the road, according to Flemington-Raritan First Aid and Rescue Squad. The driver was taken to the trauma unit at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. The crash was investigated by the Raritan Township Police Department. All Rescue Squad units were clear of the scene in about an hour. To learn more about volunteering with the rescue squad visit frfars.org. Have a news tip? Email [email protected].
