NEWTOWN BOROUGH — The Newtown Borough Council is expected to award a contract for its 2022 road program sometime in July. At its June work session, borough engineer Michele Fountain reported that bids were sent out on May 27 via Penn Bid and are scheduled to be opened on June 30 at 10 a.m. The borough's 2022 road program includes repaving Lafayette Street from Lincoln to Elm, South Congress from Penn Street to Centre Avenue and Frost Lane from Edgeboro Drive to North Congress. Also slated for repaving this year is North Congress from Federal to Frost Lane, which will be done under Newtown Township's road program and through an inter-municipal agreement approved by council this week. The boundary line between the municipalities runs down the middle of North Congress. The borough had estimated the project to cost $24,500. The township's bid came in much lower at $15,000, representing a substantial savings, said Fountain. The borough's 2022 project is budgeted to cost a little more than $134,000, which was the initial cost estimate back in December. Since then, costs have increased impacting the budget, according to Fountain. In conjunction with the streets program, the Newtown Artesian Water Company is coordinating with the borough to install new water mains along Lafayette this summer. Once the work is complete, the road will be repaved under the borough's road program with Newtown Artesian reimbursing the borough for half of the cost of the Lafayette project. All the roads in this year's program have been identified as "level one" priorities under a road inventory conducted by the borough's engineer last year. The project is expected to be bid sometime in July with construction beginning in August to give Newtown Artesian time to install its water mains on Lafayette, according to Fountain
