LAKE AND MCHENRY COUNTIES, IL — The hot temperatures are expected to continue through today in the Chicago area. Heat index values in Lake and McHenry counties could tip over 105 degrees on Wednesday, and a heat advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Residents living in these counties are reminded to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun and check in on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should not be left unattended in vehicles, and residents who must work or spend time outside should take extra precautions, including: wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, try to reschedule strenuous activities for the early morning or evening and know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. For those working outdoors, frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments is recommended.
