Description

LOS GATOS, CA — The speed limit on a stretch of road in an unincorporated area of Los Gatos in the Santa Cruz Mountains was extended by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors last week. A stretch of Black Road between Thompson Road and Highway 17 Frontage Road will also have a speed limit of 30 miles-per-hour. The existing stretch of the road only has one posted speed limit sign a quarter mile beyond Thompson Road. The speed limit addition will help "reduce the use of excessive speed by motorists" along the stretch of road, according to the resolution. County staff said that other "conventional methods" have proven ineffective in reducing motorists' speed. The primary factor in most traffic accidents in Santa Clara County is excessive speeding, according to the county. County Traffic Engineering staff recommended the extension of the 30-miles-per-hour speed limit after conducting an Engineering and Traffic Study, along with the use of a radar by the California Highway Patrol. The San Jose CHP office also agreed with the study's findings.
