DETROIT — A former Detroit police officer was sentenced to prison Wednesday morning after officials said he took $3,200 in cash bribes over nearly a two-year period, United States Attorney Dawn N. Ison announced.
Alonzo Jones, 55, was sentenced to 15 months in prison and two years of supervised release based on his guilty plea to accepting bribes, officials said.
Jones, who was a veteran officer for more than 30 years, took the cash bribes on five separate occasions from a towing company while he operated the Detroit Police Vehicle Auction, officials said. The last bribe he took was right before he retired from the department in May 2021.
"Every new police officer takes an oath to uphold our laws and act with integrity," Ison said. "This officer broke that oath and his crimes are an affront to the citizens of Detroit and the honest officers of the Detroit Police Department who put their lives on the line to protect those citizens."
Jones' arrest and conviction was a part of "Operation Northern Hook," a government investigation into corruption within the government and the Detroit Police Department involving the towing industry and more, officials said.
