28 June, 2022

Description

Pollinators populations are in global decline in the face of herbicides, insecticides, and habitat loss. Promoting vital, thriving populations of bees, ants, butterflies and other pollinators requires coordinated efforts that cross jurisdictional boundaries and engage divers partners in cultivating pollinator habitat and removing threats to their viability. Join the Central Oregon Shared Stewardship Alliance (COSSA) in learning about the role that forest restoration plays in promoting pollinator success. On our June 28th field tour, Forest Service specialists will discuss the process of selecting native plants to use as for pollinator habitat , including seed selection for use along federal roadways and native plant corridors. We will tour the Bend Seed Extractory, a facility that handles seeds from over 3,000 different species. The Extractory's manager will be on hand to describe the Extractory's collection and processing methods and discuss the importance of selecting site-adapted variety. Afterward, we will caravan to Fremont Meadow at Shevlin Park for lunch and a discussion of the role that prescribed fire plays in creating pollinator habitat . Bend Parks & Recreation will be on hand to detail their approach to sustaining pollinator habitat while accommodating recreational uses. The Pollinators, Partnership & Shared Stewardship field trip is an opportunity to explore strategies for developing cross-jurisdictional and public-private partnerships that support collaborative efforts across multiple land ownerships and operational scales. Be part of the conversation! And consider joining the Central Oregon Shared Stewardship Alliance as well as participating in for future field trips this summer.
